Sewer leaking in garden/under house
Who's responsibility is it to fix it? My guess is the sewer company

Your welcome mate.

Sounds like it could be a main sewer then. Give the water board a call and say its either a public sewer or an adopted sewer. They should sort it.

Just check there's no water leaks in the property first!

Cheers for that Bill

Jut paid a brief visit to the gaff - there is a manhole cover connected to the property and it's coming out from around the manhole cover. Didn't get a chance to have a butchers but you can hear water rushing through the sewer so it's obviously a main hub that serves other properties not just mine

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
Ok there are three types of of drain, Private, Adopted and Public.

Private - this only serves your property and is your responsibility until it leaves your boundary.

Adopted - in 2011 legislation changed and ANY drain that is shared by 2 or more people is now the responsibility of the sewerage undertaker. This includes any old Victorian drains running along the back of terraced properties. These sewers are not shown on the public map of sewers but are still the responsibility of the sewer company.

Public sewer - those shown on the public map of sewers that is the responsibility of the sewer undertaker. These are maintained and repaired by the sewer company.

Hope this helps!

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
Hopefully you won't have retarded neighbour's like mine who decided to build an extension / conservatory and floored over the inspection cover so it is now inaccessible unless they trash their floor.

IDIOTS

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
A set of sewer rods is cheaper than calling out a professional shit stirrer.

Probably is wet wipes that some.dickhead has chucked down the big.

Check if shit soup is backing up by asking to look under neighbour's sewer inspection covers.

Handy if you know exactly where the sewer turns a corner, likely block is at a right angle turn.

You might need to rid from a neighbour's inspection cover to get to the block.

Or I might just be talking shit.

The best way is to get the sewer company to admit liability, but you will have to kick up a stink.

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
How far below the cover is the pipe run [ generally speaking when you lift the cover you can see the upflow and downflow orifices and these are your blockage rodding access points ]?

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
It's a big sewer with a manhole cover, it seems to be leaking out of a crack just under the surface

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
More detail needed. Does the sewer serve only your property or does it carry other householders waste?

What are the symptoms of it leaking anyway?

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
It’s nothing to do with it being in your garden. Loads of houses have public sewers running through their gardens so ignore anything about boundaries.

So it boils down to whether it’s your waste going to a public seeer or a public sewer itself causing the problem .

Some houses even have build over agreements on them, and have extended over public sewers.

Phone the water company and check the deeds and property history.of the house.

Re: Sewer leaking in garden/under house
If it happens to be a shared sewer with a neighbour then it becomes the water company's responsibility.

I had them out last week as the upstairs toilet was flushing slowly. Our waste pipe flows into a manhole in next doors garden and when I checked it was full of shit. I tried rodding it myself to no avail so gave the water company a call

As it turned out it was the main pot on the street that was blocked and they sorted it all out within 90 minutes of my call.

MATE of mine (MASSIVE Spurs lad) got his own drainage company.... shown us some of the fantastic videos he's got of his camera going up and down the sewers... some magnificent RAT shots

www.xhamster.com

BTW, Bigot is right, if it's in your garden it's going to be your cost BUT will probably be covered by buildings insurance. Happened to me when I lived in Upminster, in high July weather, fucking stink was unbearable. The insurance paid even though it was tree root ingress that had collapsed it (because I slipped the surveyor £20 to say it wasn't!)

Water company's responsibility finishes at property boundary (waste and waste)
